Meet my new headphones. Aren’t they cute? They’re not just a pretty face (ear?) either – that’s just one of the reasons why they’re my favourite travel headphones yet.
Let me introduce you to the Audio-Technica ATH-SPORT70BT…
Even though I used to work for one of the biggest tech magazines in the UK, I’ve never been that into tech. Sure, I know my stuff. But for my own tech set-up I like to find something that works and leave it at that.
Since leaving behind my permanent home and living out my suitcase, that’s more true than ever. The only difference is I’ve become much fussier. Only the best products that I truly love get a precious spot in my 70L-capacity case.
The newest addition to my modest tech collection is the Audio-Technica ATH-SPORT70BT headphones. A set of Bluetooth headphones that are more useful than I ever could have imagined. Here’s why they’ve earned their spot.
Why the Audio-Technica ATH-SPORT70BT headphones are great for travel
I just love when a product is easy to write about and as soon as I got these headphones, I knew this post was going to be easy. Here are just a few reasons why I loved these headphones from the first use.
Anyone who’s ever travelled for an extended period of time will know how valuable waterproofing is. In fact, I think the longer you travel, the more you valuable it in a product.
From pools and oceans to leaks and accidents, having waterproof gadgets is never going to be a bad thing. Especially when it means I can run for my flight without worrying about my water bottle leaking all over my valuables…
It also means I can get as sweaty as I want (or don’t want) to while working out, without worrying about damage. The headphones are designed with sports in mind, but it’s just one of the great things about them for me.
They make me feel safer
I remember when I first came across wireless headphones – to say I was sceptical is an understatement! Now, however, it’s an almost essential feature for me. Because these headphones are wireless, I can leave my phone locked away somewhere safe while I’m out and about. Being able to take phone calls or listen to Google Maps directions without taking my phone out just makes me feel so much safer.
They’re made for multitasking
Another benefit of being hands free is that I can leave my phone in a safe place while I do stuff around the house. That means no dropping it, knocking it or getting distracted from the task at hand.
Confession: the main reason I never had wireless headphones before was because I couldn’t find some that didn’t irritate me. These ones are surprisingly comfortable – even more so than my big chunky wired ones.
Before I buy anything new, I have to have an honest conversation with myself about whether I really have space for it. These are so small that that conversation wasn’t really necessary.
They stay put
I’ve tried running, walking and doing dead lifts with these in. They don’t go anywhere (unless I want them to).
They match my phone!
I know, I know. Looks shouldn’t matter. But when a pretty design is an added bonus, who’s going to complain? Even though these headphones will probably outlive my old iPhone, I like that they match for now.
How I use the Audio-Technica ATH-SPORT70BT
The main reason I wanted to get some wireless headphones was for working out while travelling. I love using my workout time to catch up on my favourite YouTube channels, but it’s not easy on weights days. Finally, I can put an end to trying to balance my phone on the machine while I complete my reps.
Everything is harder in small spaces and somehow I always get tangled up when watching TV on my phone. Not anymore – now I can just move my phone out the way when breakfast is delivered without causing chaos in the process. I can also fidget as much as I like without sending my phone flying onto my neighbour’s lap.
I don’t always listen to music while working, but when I’m in serious concentration mode I do. (Deep house or trance to keep my energy up, in case you’re wondering.)
The one downside is that I hate the heavy feeling of headphones and hate taking them off every time I get up to get water or an unnecessary snack. The Audio-Technica ATH-SPORT70BT headphones are lightweight and don’t need to be removed, meaning I can procrastinate as often as I like without losing my tunes.
For making boring tasks less boring
Even when you don’t have a home, you still have to do chores. From washing up to washing your face, everything becomes a lot more bearable (and feels like less of a waste of time) when you can listen to a podcast.
As I already mentioned, one of the best things about these headphones is that I feel safer in public. When I’m in a new place, I can get Google Maps directions in my ear without needing to show the world that I have an iPhone (albeit a very old one). If you haven’t sussed out a new town yet or are travelling alone, that’s a real game-changer.
Audio-Technica ATH-SPORT70BT: the verdict
I never thought I’d say it but lightweight, wireless, waterproof, beautiful headphones have become my new must-have. And these ones are exactly that. I guess it’s the kind of thing you don’t know you truly need until you have it, but now they’ll be coming everywhere with me – whether that’s a quick trip to the gym or a 3-month stint in South Africa.
They’re not the cheapest headphones around but far from the priciest on the shelf. And for the sound quality and convenience, I wouldn’t have been surprised if they cost double.
I wrote this post in collaboration with Audio-Technica, but it wouldn’t be here if I didn’t love these headphones.
