I’ve lived in London for just over a year now (it was exactly one year on Sunday!) and have slowly been ticking things off my bucket list. From drinks in the roof garden and visiting Borough market, to exploring somewhere in the outer zones and travelling on the Waterloo & City line, there’s still a long way to go, but thanks to Avios*, I’m now one tick closer to completing it.
Despite seeing the Shard almost every day, I’ve never really had an opinion on it – I just wanted to go up it. I’m a big fan of sky towers as there’s no better way to see a city and gain some perspective on how big it truly is. I knew the Shard probably wouldn’t compare to the Marriott Sky Bar in Bangkok (well worth the visit should you find yourself there!), but all that waiting did mean that I ascended 244m with a certain level of expectation.
And I wasn’t at all disappointed! We decided to go up at 8.30pm so that we could watch the sunset with a glass of champagne, and it was the most beautiful I’ve ever seen London look. It was a nice little reminder of why I love this city so damn much. We all know London is a pretty big city, but the 360-degree view means you could spend hours picking out places and trying to piece it all together. I’m not sure we were able to see the full 64km view at that time, but we could sure see a long, long way, and could even see straight up to the open sky in the corners of the top floor.
So what does this have to do with Avios?
I wasn’t aware until recently, but you can spend Avios earned from shopping with some major fashion brands such as ASOS, Selfrdges and My Therea on a number of days out and experiences. Every time you shop on the Avios eStore, you can earn 2-8 Avios for every £1 you spend. There’s a whole heap of brands on there as well as deals such as collecting 50% extra points for certain stores, so if you’re a big online shopper the points can add up pretty quickly! You can then spend your Avios on everything from travel and days out, to dining and sporting events.
If you’ve been up the Shard, I’d love to know what you thought!
