I’m always somewhat skeptical when a hotel paints itself as a sanctuary in the middle of a city’s busiest area.
In Tangier, a city of 1.28 million people – even greater than Marrakech! – such a claim could sound even more far-fetched.
If anything, though, it’s somewhat of an understatement when it come to the Kasbah House.
Just one night there left me feeling rejuvenated thanks to the comfortable rooms, inspired by the intricate details in the decor throughout and warmed by the next-level hospitality received.

Checking in to Kasbah House Tangier
Arriving at Kasbah House is a prelude to the experience awaits you inside: unexpected, unassuming and serene.
The unmarked door, which blends in to the calm alleyway, would be easy to miss – so easy, in fact, that I did indeed miss it.
Behind it, though, is a hotel that unfolds into what feels like a living art gallery.
And in many ways it is; the owner, Achraf, has filled his own work of art with objects by artists from Iran, Murano, Pakistan, and Yemen.
It’s an exquisite blend of cultures that perfectly captures the international essence of the city itself while maintaining its own strong sense of identity – not an easy feat.
First Impressions
I checked in to Kasbah House after a two-week whirlwind tour through Morocco’s snow-capped mountains, vast deserts and bustling medinas.
Exhausted, bruised and weary from my Morocco travels, it would have been easy to feel out of place in such a pristine hotel – one that can only be described as a work of art.
Mixing traditional and modern, Kasbah House captures something that is very hard to pull off: a boutique hotel that oozes class yet feels completely unpretentious.
In all my years of travel, I’ve only found one other hotel that achieves such effortless opulence: Es Picarol (which is not far from Tangier, in fact, on the island of Mallorca).
Location
The location of Kasbah House makes staying there even more magical.
Sure, it’s perfectly located in the heart of the city’s medina – the ideal spot for exploring the best spots by foot, especially if you only have a short time in Tangier.
But it’s the short pedestrian-only alleys that you need to navigate to find it that makes arriving part of the experience.
Away from the bustle of the main city, the lack of cars also makes it a very peaceful spot.
And then there is the rooftop, offering 360-degree views of the city. It was standing on this terrace in the morning that made me really love Tangier and Kasbah House.
Staying at Kasbah House
Boutique hotels often stray too far into luxury territory, sacrificing warmth for unnecessarily opulent touches.
It is in this fine balancing act between homeliness and luxury that Kasbah House really stands out.
The hotel has only five rooms, each with a king sized bed and intricate linens. Yet the rooms themselves still feel cosy enough to make you want to spend time in them.
Breakfast takes place around a large dining table, where I had the pleasure of sharing conversation with two other guests. Yet you are always surrounded by works of art that wouldn’t look out of place in a palace.
It’s this perfect balance between homeliness and luxury that makes Kasbah House so special.
The one thing you should never travel without
Even though you hope you’ll never need to use it, travelling with insurance will make sure you’re covered if anything goes wrong.

Rooms
Each of the five suites at Kasbah House has its own muse: a Berber warrior queen, a traditional Moroccan festival and even the Alhambra palace.
I stayed in the latter, which included the most beautifully intricate cushions, beautiful lamps and tastefully places vases for decoration.
The attention really is in the detail here – even the shower featured a top wall shaped like a castle – while toiletries were from local organic brand Hendiya.
Of all the places I’ve stayed in Morocco, it was the most comfortable bed and the only room that included a full-length mirror!
Dining
Like many hotels, guesthouses and riads in Morocco, breakfast is included when staying at Kasbah House.
It was pretty much the usual Moroccan breakfast of various local breads, pancakes, omelettes, fresh fruits and various jams and butters.
At Kasbah House, there were also (delicious!) chocolate croissants.
Breakfast has a big impact on my overall experience of a hotel and, as far as standards go, this was easily one of the best.
For drinks, there is a choice between coffee and Moroccan tea – unfortunately not both – and a glass of fresh fruit juice.
It may have even beaten my favourite Marrakech breakfast at Riad Babouchta, which is saying something!
Kasbah House’s Breakfast takes place on a large dining table downstairs, which I shared with two other travellers during my stay.
It was a lovely way to meet others without the pressure to make constant conversation.
On warmer days, I believe it’s also possible to eat breakfast on the terrace while enjoying views of the city.

Facilities
There’s no doubt that the rooms themselves are the main attraction at Kasbah House, but the guesthouse is more than a place to sleep (and eat!).
If you want a city trip that includes some relaxation, you won’t even have to leave to find it.
The communal lounges and roof terraces are spacious, adorned in beautiful pieces of art and offer a quiet sanctuary to unwind after a day exploring (or, in my case, 10 days of exploring the rest of Morocco!).
The latter is an incredible spot for watching the sun rise – or set – over the Strait of Gibraltar, with unbeatable views of the expansive city.
The hotel also has an on-site hammam for a truly indulgent and authentic Moroccan experience.
