When it comes to choosing a hotel in Zagreb, you might be surprised at the number of options.

There’s certainly no shortage of accommodation in Zagreb – something that might surprise you, given how few tourists visit the Croatian capital.

The other thing that may surprise you is how many good hotels there are to choose from.

Zagreb has something for every type of traveller, from quirky rooms worthy of a world-class artist to cute lofts and grand hotels.

Whatever your reason for visiting, here’s how to choose the best place to stay in Zagreb.

The Esplanade Hotel in Zagreb, Croatia
The Esplanade Hotel may just be the most beautiful hotel in Zagreb.

Top pick: The absolute best place to stay in Zagreb

Just looking for the best hotel in Zagreb?

Look no further than the Esplanade. This grandiose hotel promises a luxurious stay from the moment you enter.

Expect to be greeted with a smile, a glass of champagne and a porter or two who will take care of your luggage.

And did I mention the amazing perfume that will hit your nostrils as soon as you step through the revolving front doors?

I recently spent two nights at the Esplanade Zagreb and I seriously didn’t want to leave!

The rooms are massive, the location is perfect and – best of all – it’s surprisingly affordable. There aren’t many places in Europe where you could stay somewhere this incredible for such a small price tag.

If you need any more convincing, the breakfast will win you over.

I’ve stayed at many hotels – probably around 100 in the last year – and never had such an amazing breakfast.

You can have anything you like, including plenty of vegan options, and wash it down with a super tasty coffee of your choice.

I usually find luxury hotels a little too stuffy, but the Esplanade is amazingly homely.

The friendly staff make it even more so, as do the sofa areas and the extra touches such as the handy umbrella supply.

If you want a Zagreb hotel you won’t forget, book the Esplanade.

Botanicar cafe in Zagreb Croatia

The best area to stay in Zagreb

Each area in Zagreb has its own vibe, from traditional and historical to modern and hipster.

Before you choose a hotel or apartment in Zagreb, it’s good to consider which area you’d like to stay in.

Zagreb isn’t a massive city – in fact, it’s pretty tiny! – but it does have several distinct areas.

Here’s how to choose the best area of Zagreb for your trip:

If you only have one day in Zagreb…

If you have limited time in Zagreb and want to see as much as possible, choose somewhere central.

The best place in Zagreb for sightseeing is the Lower Town, Donji Grad. You’ll find many of Zagreb’s best restaurants and bars here, as well as a large number of hotels.

The Lower Town in Zagreb is a super central location, making it easy to explore almost anywhere in the city. It’s also the starting point for many of the city tours.

Top pick: Hotel Jagerhorn

The oldest hotel in Zagreb, Hotel Jagerhorn was completely refurbished in 2011.

It offers a comfortable stay right in the heart of Old Town Zagreb and is just minutes from many of the city’s best sights.

For the best views of Zagreb…

Stay in Zagreb’s Upper Town. Set on top of a small hill, Upper Town (Gornji Grad) has the best views in the entire city.

From here, you can take in panoramic views of Zagreb, with all of its churches, red roofs and windy streets.

And, if you don’t fancy walking up the hill at the end of the day, you can take the short funicular ride for 4 Kuna (about $0.50).

Top pick: Hotel President

Enjoy a comfortable stay at Hotel President. Despite its central location in the heart of the city, Hotel President feels like a country escape – giving you the best of both worlds.

Hotel President is spacious and airy thanks to its large windows and lush gardens. It’s also close to many of the best Zagreb attractions, including museums, markets and cafés.

To see a unique side of Zagreb…

Zagreb is such a compact city that you don’t need to stay right in the centre to enjoy it.

If you want a more unique Zagreb experience, consider staying out of the main town. Tresnjevka sits to south west of the city centre and is well worth a visit.

Coffee culture is big in Zagreb, and some of the city’s best coffee shops can be found in Tresnjevka. Bargain hunters and conscious shoppers will also find plenty of second hand shops and fresh food markets here.

Top pick: Blue

Not just for lovers of the colour blue, Blue is an exceptional hotel in a beautiful part of Zagreb.

Expect modern rooms, massive beds and tasteful decor throughout. Blue is a modern hotel with a little more character.

If you’re looking for a comfortable stay in a more local neighbourhood, it’s impossible to beat.

If you’re on a layover…

It’s probably easiest to stay near the airport.

The journey from Zagreb airport to the city centre isn’t far (it’s less than 20km) but it can take a long time in rush hour traffic.

If you only have a short time to explore Zagreb and want to maximise, drop your bags at the Hotel Cool airport hotel and save yourself the hassle of lugging them around Zagreb’s cobbled streets.

Hotel Cool lives up to its name with a fun, trendy vibe throughout. Rooms are spacious and comfortable, and you’ll have everything you need on-site – including a delicious breakfast.

Not only that, but it’s great value for money.
